The End

Some people talk about Armegeddon, nuclear destruction, an impending ice age that will strike our globe. What are your thoughts on the end of human civilization on this planet?

What are your strongest concerns for the earth?

  • economic crash

  • asteroids or meteors

  • satellites and space junk falling from the sky

  • nuclear war

  • magnetic force of the earth waning

  • gravitational pull weakens to the point we fall away from the earth

  • red tide or corruption of sea life

  • viral epidemics, plagues

  • biological warfare

  • one world government gone corrupt

  • continual terrorism, guerilla warfare

  • alien invasion

  • people or beings from another planet try to populate earth

  • widened gap between elite and impoverished

  • injustices and abuse accepted

  • imbalanced ecosystem

  • melted ice caps, climate changes

  • mega storms

  • earthquakes, volcanoes

  • more from your head...

Which do you think will have the most influence in your lifetime?

The next generation's lifetime?

The next ten years?

The coming year?

Do you think that humans will some day be extinct--leaving another species, or microscopic organisms?

If the universe continues to expand, what does that mean for life on earth?

What scientific reports have you heard about our future?

Do you think these are inevitable?

Religions often have conclusions for human life on earth. List some not mentioned below, check which ones come closest to your beliefs.

  • escape and repopulation on space station or other planet

  • move to another plane of awareness

  • sparring between the gods for your future

  • loving intervention to stop injustices

  • world war destroys a huge percentage of the population

  • rebuilding of planet after devastation

  • everyone dies

  • one religion gains global respect

  • civilization continually learns from mistakes, improves and finds ideal life

  • this civilization gives birth to an entirely new one

  • life continues, suffering continues

Separating your practical fears and knowledge from your religious convictions for a moment, what do you believe might happen to the earth?

What are some Biblical descriptions of the end times?

It is most important for you to understand what will happen in the last days. People will laugh at you. They will live doing the evil things they want to do.... But do not forget this one thing...to the Lord one day is as a thousand years...the Lord is not slow in doing what he promised --the way some people understand slowness. But God is being patient with you. He does not want any to be lost, but he wants all people to change their hearts and lives. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

II Peter 3:3-10 NCV

First, I want to remind you that in the last days there will come scoffers who will do every wrong they can think of, and laugh at the truth. But don't forget this, dear friends, that a day or a thousand years from now is like tomorrow to the Lord. He isn't really being slow about his promised return, even though it sometimes seems that way. But he is waiting, for the good reason that he is not willing that any should perish, and he is giving more time for sinners to repent.
The day of the Lord is surely coming, as unexpectedly as a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise and the heavenly bodies will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be burned up.

II Peter 3:3, 8-10 TLB

And Jesus answered them, 'Take care that no one decieves you, because many will come using my name and saying, "I am the christ," and they will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for this is something that must happen, but the end will not be yet.
For nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All this is only the beginning of the birthpangs.
This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed to the whole world as evidence to the nations. And then the end will come.
So when you see the appalling abomination of which the prophet Daniel spoke, set up in the holy place...then those in Judea must escape to the mountains.
But as for that day and hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, no one but the Father alone.'

Matthew 24:4-8, 14-15, 36 JB

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

Romans 8:15 NIV

He shall... wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law.
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week...upon the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.

Daniel 7:25; 9:27 RSV

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first earth had vanished, and there was no longer any sea.
Now at last God has his dwelling among men! He will dwell among them and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be an end to death, and to mourning and crying and pain, for the old order has passed away!
A draught from the water-springs of life will be my free gift to the thirsty.

God of the universe, the future seems frightening. Help me see what part You have in it, what part I have in it. Throughout the Bible You reassure us to rest in You, lean on You, depend on You for answers and strength. Help me apply this to my concerns about the future. Show me if there are ways that I can contribute to a better future for our earth. Help me live with goodness in mind. Give others insights about how to survive, how to manage populations, how to provide food and shelter. Give us ideas to sustain a better life for everyone.
